Drawing on Wood

I acquired an old table from a friend to put in my flat so I decided to draw all over with paint pens. This is one of my favourite faces I did on it, I think paint pens creates a nice effect on wood and look almost like a sticker.

I found this plank of wood in an abandoned building, it already a coat of blue paint on it so I thought it would make a nice canvas for a row of characters. I had fun doing this and will look out for cool bits of wood to draw on in the future. I don't know how this would connect with my profession practice but I guess I could think about how this process might be suitable for certain concepts in future briefs.

Pogger

This artist has developed a nice a way of making character. I like the abnormal and freaky faces combined with mark making gives an organic feel to them. The digital colour really benefits his designs. I want to experiment with more mark making texture in my line work and then applying digital colour. I think my work has been two line based with not enough mark making and texture. He often draws with paint pens on to pieces of wood and old skateboard decks which is cool.

Joseph Loughborough

Joseph Loughborough:

I really like the loose bold lines in his work. He makes nice shapes with they way he outlines with energy and gesture. I think he uses charcoal and maybe marker pens to outline. The way he uses white tone on the characters works well with the bold black outline. The wary body shapes makes the characters interesting and distorted. I really like the combination of black and white on a yellow/gold background.

Young and Sick

Young and Sick:

I found this illustrator that makes really cool looking characters. He uses simple bold outlines with cool tribal shapes. He makes work for events and bands and did this video for Foster The People that is a time lapse of them painting a huge design on the side of building. I thought this was really cool and is interesting example of how illustration can be used.

Jon Kenn Mortensen

Jon Kenn:

I really like Jon Kenn's work he creates loads of different types of monsters. I really like the mark making he uses, i think he uses a biro. The texture makes them surreal but also weirdly life like. It makes me want to experiment with more texture and mark making in my own work but I always seem to avoid it.
